Tarot is a form of divination that has been used for many years. Cards are used to hone in on psychic intuition, offering insight, guidance and reassurance of those we love in spirit being around us. Each card drawn interacts with the others around it to tell a story about the life and questions that the "client" has. Each deck has 48 cards consisting of a major and minor arcana; the traditional suits being pentacles, wands, cups and swords.
Historically, it is hard to locate the exact creation of Tarot with many theories and suggestions on the origin. However, we can prove these cards were used as a game in France from the early 1400s. In the 1800s it was noted that they could be used for divination and the first specific deck was created for that purpose rather than a parlour game by a French occultist called Jean-Baptiste Alliette.
The decks that are most commonly used now, and I use a variation of, are the Rider-Waite cards which have the images on them now associated with Tarot. These are detailed pictures rather than purely an image of 4 cups for example. These cards were designed by an English Occultist, Arthur Waite and an artist, Pamela Coleman-Smith in 1909 who based the images on Kabbala symbolism.
Whilst I use the now traditional Rider-Waite deck, my first experience of a reading was with playing cards and an amazing intuitive medium from Dorset called Mary Miller. She was renowned for her skills; both with the cards and palmistry. She told me detail as a very sceptical 18 year old that there was no way she could have known at the time. She told me that I was able to read cards, and at the time I honestly laughed it off! Back then I was in engineering and to me if something worked or it didn't there was a way to find the cause and prove it... yet this is something that cannot be proven by diagnostics and diagrams, you can only experience it. I saw my first spirit perhaps a year later, in the middle of the day as clearly as you are reading this. A good friend had passed away, and I honestly believed he was there and I had been lied to about his death. This left me with more questions than answers!
I began investigating Tarot and working on my intuitive abilities when I started working in a holistic therapy centre many years ago, but recognised and accepted there are things that cannot be explained after I survived what should have been a fatal car accident with what was considered minor injuries. Emergency services could not understand how I was here, yet somehow I was safe. Yes, I had yet more questions, so I began learning and honing my ability in order to help others. Occasionally I may see people as clearly as I saw my friend, sometimes I have "a feeling", sometimes spirit grab my attention themselves; for example my Gran turns over my TV and hides things, and no, I still cannot explain it!
